Life in the Parish slows down traditionally over the summer months, with opportunities for ”R and R” for clergy, choir, Sunday School teachers, organisation leaders and all who have been so involved in the busy parochial life of Derryloran.

Our SHOE BOX APPEAL continues to help orphanage work in Afghanistan via contacts in the Royal Irish Regiment currently serving in that war ravaged country. The need is great but so too has the generosity of those supporting the Appeal. The recipient Afghans are most grateful – as is the Regiment!

The HUB COMMUNITY CHOIR CONCERT was a wonderful evening with input from our Choir, Starzone (our junior choir) and other artistes – the bucket collection realising over £1,100 for Magherafelt Marvels and Derryloran Church – well done one and all! Watch out for THE HUB COMMUNITY CARNIVAL in Cookstown on Fri 30th June from 6pm!

COOKSTOWN CHRISTIAN AID: has celebrated its 50th Anniversary with a Civic Reception in the Burnavon courtesy of Councillor Trevor Wilson. Guests included supporters of the charity past and present and their tremendous contribution over the years was acknowledged by the Chairman, Canon Porteus.

SUMMER TIMES: Please note that during June, July and August our morning services will be at 9am (as usual) and 11am (time change), with no evening services over that period. Please endeavour to support our services throughout the summer month!

EASTER VESTRY: We welcome new members on to the Vestry, the newly elected Nominators and Diocesan Synodspersons, and, of course, Church Wardens for the ensuing year – Sam Glasgow (Rector’s) and Trevor Rollins (Peoples’). A full report will follow in our Parish Magazine in due course.

BARCELONA: Our travel group had a most enjoyable visit to Barcelona making full use of 2 days on the City Bus Tours with highlights such as La Catedral and the Sagrada Familia basilica, a fine hotel and a variety of dining experiences in that great cosmopolitan city..

BUS PASS EXPLORERS: With a visit to Lisburn under our belts taking in the Cathedral, Somme Exhibition and Linen Museum, our May visit featured “An Afternoon on the Hill” – visiting the Robinson Library, No 5, the Cathedral – and the Fusiliers Museum. Other trips are planned for June and July and will be announced in church.

CHILDRENS’ DAY: will be observed on Sunday 4th June with our Sunday School Awards being distributed at the 11am Service. We record our gratitude to the Superintendent, William Stewart and his team of teachers for yet another year of faithful service..

SUMMERLIGHTS: Once again Summerlights in association with Scripture Union will be running in our Parish Halls from Mon 3rd to Fri 7th July from 1030am to 1230pm. Those who attended in previous years will receive invitations, but please accept this as a personal invitation to ALL children to the event!

SAINTS’ DAYS: will be celebrated in church on week-days as usual at 10.30am followed by refreshments as follows:-

  • 1 May Sts Philip and James
  • 25 May Ascension
  • 31 May: the Visitation
  • Fri 9 June – St Columba
  • Thur 29 June– St Peter
  • Tue 25 July St James

Have a restful and enjoyable summer!
