The Parish Rector, the Reverend
Canon R. J. N. Porteus has produced a number of historical accounts of the
local parishes, among which is this intriguing book that studies the
history of Derryloran Parish Church back to the 12C! The following blurb
is from the back page;
Derryloran
Parish Church is one of Cookstown's most famous landmarks. The present
Church was built to the specifications of the famous English architect
John Nash, who was responsible for the design of Buckingham Palace, Regent
Street, Brighton Pavillion, and many London churches. In addition he
designed Killymoon Castle in Cookstown.
Derryloran
derives it's name from St Luran, a local bishop or abbot who lived in the
neighbourhood around 1123A.D.
This
book takes a fascinating look at the Parish and it's clergy, who have been
traced back to 1367.
It
also chronicles the changing years within the parish from the original 17C
Church and graveyard at Blackhill, to the present Church at Gortalowry,
which has undergone renovations totalling over £500,000 to mark the Millennium.
"The
Oak Grove of Luran" - A History of Derryloran Parish Church features
more than 30 photographs and original architectural drawings - some by
Nash - and gives a most informative account of the life and times of the
Parish.
